Lipkin’s Bakery in Northeast Philadelphia, which is one of the few kosher bakeries in the area, announced that it will close, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
The bakery is known for its knishes and sells them wholesale.
The last day Lipkin’s will be open to the public is May 2, although its last deliveries to delis and synagogues will occur a week later.
Owner Steve Nawalany told the Inquirer the building will be sold.
Nawalany said he wants to reopen as a wholesale-only operation. That would allow the store to achieve circle K kosher status because he would close on Shabbat. It also eliminates the unpredictability of walk-in traffic.
Originally located in South Philadelphia, Lipkin’s moved to Castor Avenue in 1975.
My mom and I used to go there in the 60s and 70s when they were at 4th and McKean in South Philly!
