Three Area Colleges Vied for Hillel Basketball Title

Three area teams took part in the National Hillel Basketball Tournament.

Hillel and hoopla: Perfect together?

It was for 40 college teams vying for top honors in the fifth annual National Hillel Basketball Tournament, held recently at the University of Maryland. Among the squads taking part: Men’s teams from Drexel University and Lehigh University as well as a woman’s team representing Muhlenberg College.

Those teams didn't provide the only Philly flavor to the tournament: Entrepreneur Wayne Kimmel, a U of Maryland alum, attended, and the startup wizard had a tip for the teams — well, a tipoff, as he handled the chores for the jump ball to get it all started. His son, Hunter, joined his dad in operating the scoreboard.

Alas, the numbers just weren't there for the Philly teams. All three lost in the playoffs: Lehigh to Wisconsin; Drexel to NYU; and Muhlenberg to Yeshiva.

The men's championship was taken by Boston University; and the women's by Stern College for Women/Yeshiva University.
