The Jewish Exponent won five awards competing against weekly publications across Pennsylvania.
The Jewish Exponent rolled through the 2015 Professional Keystone Press Awards, with five wins along the way.
Executive editor Lisa Hostein won first place in the Editorial Writing category, while staff writers Eric Berger and Amishai Gottlieb also garnered top prize in the category of Ongoing News Coverage. They were cited for their coverage of last summer's war in Gaza, which included stories written from Philadelphia and Israel, with a focus on the myriad ways the war was affecting local residents.
The annual awards contest is sponsored by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.
Second place awards went to the Exponent’s arts and culture editor, Greg Salisbury, for Feature Beat Reporting. He was honored for a broad array of features on Jewish culture.
Berger claimed a second award in the General News category for his story, “Robot Keeps CHOP Patient Linked,” about a day school student from Florida who kept up with his classes with a high-tech device as he was being treated locally for cancer.
The Exponent's graphics editor, Julia Elkin, received honorable mention for Front Page Design.
The wins, for work in 2014, all came in Division V for weekly publications based in Pennsylvania with a circulation of at least 10,000, which included such publications as Philadelphia Weekly, Philadelphia City Paper, AL DIA, The Almanac and Philadelphia Gay News.
"It is gratifying to see this great media company honored and to be ranked among the top newspapers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, said Steven Rosenberg, the Exponent's new general manager and publisher's representative. "This recognition is extremely important as we continue to showcase the important stories in our local communities and in the Jewish community overseas."
Hostein, the paper's executive editor, added: "The awards are a tribute to the talented and dedicated staff of the Exponent who work tirelessly to bring our community the quality journalism it deserves."
