To Bigotry No Sanction

June 2 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

A FREE, virtual performance of “To Bigotry No Sanction,” a new cantata based on George Washington’s 1790 Letter to the Jews of Newport, Rhode Island, by composer Jonathan Comisar and endorsed by Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Ron Chernow.

The program includes an exclusive screening of the cantata, featuring members of The Philadelphia Orchestra and a multicultural choir representing 17 languages, conducted by Kensho Watanabe, former assistant conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra, plus a reading by George Washington as portrayed by Dean Malissa, the official historical interpretive actor of Mt. Vernon.

Following the performance, filmmaker Sam Katz of History Making Productions will interview Comisar and producer Rabbi Lance J. Sussman. The performance was previously recorded in the magnificent setting of the Masonic Temple in Philadelphia.
