Temple Brith Achim Bluegrass Shabbat

June 17 @ 7:30 am - 9:00 pm

There will be a very different Shabbat service at Temple Brith Achim on June 17. That night, as part of the synagogue’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration, the Boston-based Jewish bluegrass band Kol Kahol will be leading the regular Friday night service.

Formed in 2019, Kol Kahol seeks to push the boundaries of contemporary Jewish music and traditional American Roots music within the context of Jewish prayer. In combining these two musical identities, the band tells its story through music; not only are they proud of their Eastern European Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jewish traditions, but also of their American heritage and its influence on their lives and musical style. In doing so, they offer a unique spiritual experience to those who are wrestling with their own identity, particularly regarding what it means to be an American Jew.

The members of the band are all highly trained professional musicians, including graduates of the Berklee School of Music. Members of the band also play with more traditional bluegrass ensembles in Boston and around the country, and one of the band founders serves as a cantorial soloist during the Jewish High Holidays.

The evening at Temple Brith Achim will begin with a “country picnic” at 6:30 p.m., followed by the service at 7:30 p.m. A fried chicken picnic dinner will be available for $10 (pre-orders required at the Brith Achim website, brithachim.org), or attendees can bring their own food to the picnic. Members of the community are invited to attend.
