Presentation on Louis Magaziner
July 8 @ 10:30 am
Louis Magaziner, an immigrant from Humenne, Austria, became the first Jewish graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Architecture and went on to design many prominent buildings in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Julian Francis Abele, the program’s first African American graduate, designed Duke University’s campus and worked on numerous local landmarks including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Central Branch of the Free Library. In this illustrated talk, Magaziner’s great-grandniece explores the strong bond and lifelong friendship that developed between these two notable men. Amy Cohen spent twenty years as a middle and high school social teacher. Currently, she is the Director of Education for History Making Productions, a film company that makes documentaries about Philadelphia history. She has a B.A. in history from Brown University and a master’s in history from the University of Pennsylvania. She has written several articles about local history and history education for publications including Hidden City, Social Studies Journal and Legacies.
