Azriel Schmidt, age 72, passed away at his home in Bryn Mawr, surrounded by family on June 4, 2021. Beloved husband to Susan (nee Eisenberg). Azi was born in Petach Tikvah, Israel in 1948. He served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Force and then studied biology at the University of Tel Aviv. He earned his doctorate in virology at the Weizmann Institute. He was a dedicated, talented scientist who worked for many years at Merck. He married Susan in 1974 and they enjoyed 46 years by each other’s side. They had two children, Ben and Yael and five grandchildren. Azi had many interests and hobbies. He was a music lover, an avid gardener and a world traveler. He was a long-time member of Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El in Wynnewood. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be missed by his close extended family and friends. He is survived by Susan; his brother Shlomo Shavit; his sister Ayalah Klingman; his daughter Yael (Josh) Rosen; his son Ben (Ann Vale) Schmidt; his grandchildren Jake, Sammy, Joey, Liza and Jonathan. Services were held on June 6. Contributions in his memory may be made to Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia or to Penn’s Abramson Cancer Center.
