Eagles Donate $35K to JFCS
The Philadelphia Eagles announced on April 21 a $35,000 donation to Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Greater Philadelphia’s Helping Healthcare Heroes Support Group to expand mental health services for essential workers and their families.
“From the moment that COVID-19 began to threaten our way of life, we have been actively involved in deep and thoughtful conversations around ways to best serve and support the well-being of those on the front lines and their families,” Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie said. “As part of these careful discussions, and in collaboration with some of the best minds and thought leaders in our city, we have developed a comprehensive plan aimed at providing critical support to essential health care workers.”
As a result of the donation, JFCS is hosting weekly supportive forums for doctors, nurses and their families facilitated by different JFCS professionals.
“With the Eagles’ support, JFCS is furthering its commitment to assisting medical professionals and their families,” JFCS President Paula Goldstein said. “These everyday heroes are on the front lines sacrificing their safety and the safety of their loved ones so they can save lives across our region.”
State Rep Provides More Than 300 Free Meals in Northeast Philadelphia

State Rep. Jared Solomon and community partners teamed up on April 23 to provide hundreds of free cooked meals from local restaurants to various Northeast Philadelphia communities.
“Many residents have had their entire livelihoods upended, and others are still working on the frontlines during this pandemic,” Solomon said. “With all that’s going on, I wanted to help bring back a sense of normalcy and thank all our frontline workers.”
Solomon joined Matt Rossi, owner of Nick’s Roast Beef on Cottman Avenue and, later, Tio Pepe owner Orlando Jacome at their respective restaurants to provide more than 300 free meals to residents, including medical professionals and other frontline workers.
Labor Committee Sponsors Essay Contest
The Philadelphia Jewish Labor Committee is sponsoring an essay contest with prizes of $500 and $250 for the top two entries.
There are two options for topics: “How do times of crisis emphasize the importance of the working class?” and “What is the difference between being working-class and having privilege during COVID-19?”
Submissions should include a full name, phone number, email and college plans attached to the essay, which should be 500 words at most. Send submissions to Sigal Felber at felber1@kenyon.edu and Michael Hersch at mhersch@comcast.net. The deadline is May 8.
