Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy Head of School Sharon Levin announced to the school’s Board of Directors that she will retire effective June 30, 2021, the school said on May 18.

Levin has spent 34 years at the Bryn Mawr school, including the past 10 as head of school.

Levin began her career at what was then Akiba Hebrew Academy as a history teacher. She later served as coordinator of the Humanities Department and academic dean before becoming head of school.

In a press release from Barrack, Levin was credited with integrating the Robert Saligman Middle School of the Perelman Jewish Day School into Barrack “and moved the school toward financial prosperity having overseen financially balanced operations during the past several years.”

Levin also was praised for her work this year in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Prior to the actual closing of school, Sharon and her team had already begun a great deal of work to prepare for remote learning,” the release said. “As a result, our dedicated teachers were ready with the technological methodologies to conduct meaningful distance learning almost immediately.”

Former board President Michele Levin and executive committee member Lisa Sandler will co-chair a head of school search committee.
