French crisp lettuce, also called “Batavia” is currently available in many markets.

This lovely, leafy green delivers the crunch of romaine with more flavor. Its deep green leaves are tinged with beautiful purple edges — this is aesthetically pleasing and healthier. Nutrition experts advise us that deeper-colored foods pack a more powerful punch in terms of vitamins and minerals, so why not reach for the French crisp lettuce when it is available? I surely will.

My latest summer salad creation gave French crisp lettuce a starring role; if you can’t lay your hands on French crisp, any lettuce will do just fine.

French Crisp Summer Salad

Serves two to four

1 head French crisp lettuce, rinsed and torn into bite-sized pieces

1 large, ripe tomato, cut in pieces

1 avocado, diced

1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and chopped

10 basil leaves, rinsed and snipped

Sprinkle of salt, pepper and garlic powder

Spritz of cider vinegar

Drizzle of olive oil

  1. Toss all the vegetables in a salad bowl.
  2. Top with salt, pepper, garlic, vinegar, and oil, and toss well. Serve immediately.
