The National Liberty Museum’s Teacher as Hero Award program honored on May 6 South Philadelphia High School counselor Emily Goodman with its grand prize, the Exceptional Teacher Award. Goodman was cited for support of her students that raised graduate rates from 38 percent to 86 percent in two years. In addition, American Sign Language (ASL) teacher Amy Andersen from Ocean City High School in Cape May, N.J., was recognized for the 2004 founding of the school’s ASL program. The awards recognize outstanding educators who represent best practices in teaching and serve as role models to their colleagues and students.
