On Sept. 8, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s Estate Planners Advisory Committee hosted its 21st annual Solomon and Sylvia Bronstein Seminar, a unique opportunity for local estate-planning professionals to stay on the cutting edge of estate-planning trends. The seminar featured the presentation of the 2016 Edward N. Polisher Award to Lawrence S. Chane, Esq., who chairs the Tax, Benefits and Private Client Practice Group at BlankRome LLP. Chane was honored for his distinguished service to the Jewish Federation’s endowment program.
During his acceptance of the award, Chane noted what ignited his deep involvement as a Jewish communal leader was a 1993 Jewish Federation mission to Germany, Poland and Israel. “During the trip, I had the pleasure of meeting and being in the company of a ‘kid’ who was by far the most energetic member of the group — someone who participated in each and every activity, including all of the optional excursions. The ‘kid’ was none other than Ed Polisher, who was a mere 91 years young at the time. Given that experience, it is truly a great honor to accept the award named in his memory. With that trip in mind, I have chosen as the recipient of this year’s distribution from the Polisher Endowment Fund the [Jewish Federation’s] Israel Programs Scholarship Aid Fund, a need-based scholarship fund which awards over $100,000 annually to residents of the Greater Philadelphia area.”
During the seminar, Jewish Federation Endowments Corporation President Morey H. Goldberg highlighted ways in which Greater Philadelphia’s professionals can partner with the Jewish Federation to help their clients meet their philanthropic goals. The morning’s keynote speaker, David A. Handler, Esq., who heads the Trusts and Estates Practice Group of Kirkland & Ellis LLP, discussed contemporary estate planning income tax issues.
