Fall Fashions Now Finding Their Way Into Area Stores

I am yearning for fall — and fall fashion.

Hello fashionistas, and welcome to fall.
I hope you enjoyed the warm days, long evenings and slower pace of summer, although, I must admit, it is unbearably hot and humid as I write this.
I am yearning for fall — and fall fashion.
There is nothing I adore more than white jeans — especially with flowy, boho tops. Yet I’m happy to put away these tired-of-them-being-wrinkled-all-the-time-and-having-to- press those white jeans and wide-leg statement pants again and again.
Walking through stores overflowing with new merchandise in camel and gray and rich, bold color prints, my eye starts to shift that way: I’m now pairing new, darker jeans with metallics or jewel tones and, of course, reaching for always-right black and white.
This is a great time to grab sale pieces you passed on last spring.
Available everywhere at every price point, the whole bohemian luxe, ’70s/disco style continues right into autumn. It’s all about movement, including floaty tunics and blouses, wide-leg flared pants (loving my AG “The Janis” flared jeans) and longer fluid skirts.
There’s a cool factor added this season. As in spring, there are lots of great individual pieces — embroidery, beading and florals in velvet and suede — that give it all a bit of an edge. Lurex in sparkly silver and gold is omnipresent and worn for day as well as evening. It’s so ’70s. So modern. So rock-star chic.
Emailing with my fashion guru, Ken Downing, Neiman Marcus’ vice president and fashion director, I asked, “If you could buy one new thing for fall, what would it be?”
He replied: “Go gold with Ziggy Stardust/glam rock style. Something fabulous and ’70s-inspired. This season, try a gold shoe or bootie — or one with gold trim — a must that goes with, and updates, everything.”
Doesn’t every woman love a good glass of wine and a yummy piece of pie? Fall’s color is bordeaux or berry. Wear it with ivory, khaki and camel now, moving into gray, navy, black and dark denim as the weather turns cooler.
Structured, top-handle handbags are huge again and better with gold hardware. Heels are chunky and high, but not crazy killer high. Kitten heels and loafers suddenly seem new and retro, too.
Jewelry is big and makes a statement, with layers of necklaces, multiple bracelets and big, dangly earrings.
And lastly, no matter your politics, all agree that First Lady Michelle Obama spoke magnificently at the Democratic National Convention — and looked exquisite as well. This is exactly how you want to look for fall.
Her Christian Siriano sapphire/blueberry silk dress was flowy, moving beautifully as she crossed the stage; her silver kitten heels added just the right sparkle. Elegant. Of-the-moment. She was perfection.
Well, I hope I’ve ignited your appetite for fall fashion and all the gorgeous clothes to come. Start dreaming of your own must-haves for the season, and I’ll see you in the stores.
