The Jewish Federation’s Renaissance Group sent 100 volunteers to help repair 13 homes in Northeast Philadelphia.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia marked the start of spring with some major spring cleaning. On Sunday, March 22, the Jewish Federation’s Renaissance Group — an affinity of Jewish men and women ages 22-45 — partnered with Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia for the second annual Renaissance Group Rebuild event.
One hundred volunteers worked tirelessly alongside skilled workers to repair 13 homes in Northeast Philadelphia and transform them into better and safer living conditions for the homeowners.
The homeowners are all clients of the Rhawnhurst NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community), an initiative jointly funded by the Jewish Federation and Catholic Social Services that provides services to help seniors remain living independently in their own homes. They were selected to receive home repairs by the Rhawnhurst NORC.
Services provided included critical repairs, energy efficiency upgrades, interior and exterior painting, landscaping, home cleanouts and home modifications.
Every home received a brand new smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector, which were generously donated and installed by Renaissance Group member Scott Lipner, who heads sales and operations at Emergency Response Associates.
In addition, every homeowner was presented with a special gift of a hamsa from the Jewish Federation, symbolizing the hand of God and protection.
Jewish Federation President Bud Newman praised the volunteers: “I am so proud of the energy, compassion and passion” the Renaissance Group members “bring to the lives of others and know the future of our Jewish community will be brighter because of you.”
Leah Howard and Daniel Levine, Renaissance Group Mitzvah Co-Chairs, thanked the group “for being a part of this community, for helping others and for being here,” and encouraged volunteers to speak to them to seek out other opportunities for giving back.
Renaissance Group Rebuild was also made possible with the help of Habitat for Humanity, the Rhawnhurst NORC and Canada Dry Delaware Valley, and sponsorship from the Jewish Federation Real Estate Group (JFRE), with a generous donation from its JFRE Fund, a philanthropic vehicle that addresses pressing real estate needs in our community.
