Gershman Y Hires New Executive Director

After half a year without an executive director, Maxine Gaiber will lead the Gershman Y effective July 1.

After six months without an executive director, the Gershman Y announced today that Maxine Gaiber has been tapped to take over the Center City Jewish cultural center effective July 1.

Gaiber is no stranger to the nonprofit arts world. For the past eight years, she has helmed the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, located in Wilmington. She has also served in leadership positions at the San Diego Museum of Art, the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach and the Newport Harbor Art Museum, all in California.

In a statement released earlier today, Anne Lazarus, the co-chair of the Gershman board, stated: "As a respected and seasoned professional, Maxine brings with her a love of the arts that will be vital to our goal of repositioning and rebranding the Gershman Y as the center for Jewish arts and culture on the Avenue of the Arts."

Gaiber takes the reins half a year after the Gershman board relieved previous executive director Linda Steinberg of her duties, and months after significant staff turnover.

In the same press release, Gaiber stated: "I am looking forward to embarking on this new challenge with the support of the board and the Philadelphia cultural community.  This position ideally combines my many years of nonprofit management with my passion for the rich Jewish cultural heritage."
