Barrack Basketball Teams Secure Wins Before Winter Break

The Barrack Hebrew Academy Boys Varsity Basketball team won their first game of the season while the school's Lady Cougars Girls Varsity continued a winning streak, wrapping up before the holiday break with a 6-1 record.

The Barrack Hebrew Academy Boys Varsity Basketball team won their first game of the season on Monday, defeating International Christian at home, 57-54.

At halftime, it looked like the Cougars' rough start to the season would continue as they found themselves behind 23-36. But they came out to start the second half with their best defense of this young season so far. The players forced numerous turnovers while amassing nine steals, en route to outscoring their opponents 35-18 for the half. Barrack recorded a season high of 30 rebounds for the game.

Leading Barrack in scoring was Ari Yosef with 21 points. Cory Barnetand came off the bench to play some great basketball in the final minutes of the game and ended up with 10 points.

Two days later, the Cougars were back on the road facing New Foundations Charter in their last game until the new year. The Cougars started off slowly but picked up their level of play in the second quarter to tie the score at the half, 33-33. Some questionable calls went against Barrack in the second half and they ended up losing, 47-52. Yosef had an amazing shooting night, contributing 28 points to go along with his three steals. Marc Meltzer had three points and seven rebounds. Elliot Bernstein filled up the box score with eight points, six assists, four rebounds and a steal.

The Barrack Lady Cougars Girls Varsity team moved to a record of 6 and 1 on the season with a one point win against Kimberton on the road Monday. In an extremely close low-scoring affair, Barrack prevailed 20-19 after the score was tied at 9-9 at the half. With one minute left in the game, Kimberton was ahead by one point with both teams' defenses totally dominating up to that point. Talia Raikin scored the go-ahead basket and the Cougars held on to win during what could only be described as a stressful final minute.

Last Wednesday, the Lady Cougars lost their first game of the season to Perkiomen, 31-72, after starting the season with an impressive four-game winning streak. The home team had no answer for Perkiomen's swarming, trapping defense of Barrack's ball handlers. This led to countless easy fast-break baskets for Perkiomen. The Lady Cougars got back on track the next day with a win at Renaissance Academy, 30-18.
