"Resistance, Defiance and Courage: Jewish Acts of Survival" will be the focus of the 2006 Memorial Ceremony for the Six Million Jewish Martyrs. The annual tribute, set for Sunday, April 30, at 1 p.m., will be held at the Monument to the Six Million Jewish Martyrs, 16th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia. The program – sponsored by the Memorial Committee for the Six Million Martyrs of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia – will feature guest speaker Hadassah Lieberman, daughter of Holocaust survivors, a health-care professional and the wife of Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut. Middle- and high-school students will join Holocaust survivors at the Jewish Community Services Building, at 2100 Arch St. in Philadelphia, for a 10:30 a.m. informal breakfast, where survivor and activist Judy Meisel will share her personal story, and how she turned her experiences as a Holocaust survivor into positive action to combat religious intolerance and bigotry here in the United States. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held at Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel, 300 S. 18th St., Philadelphia. Free buses will be available for groups planning on attending the event.
