Tedric A. Harris, 78, a retired mechanical engineer and teacher, died April 27 in State College, Pa. He was formerly of Abington.

Born in Philadelphia, Harris graduated from Upper Darby High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1953 and a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1954 from Penn State.

Harris retired from SKF Industries (a ball-bearing firm) in 1991 as vice president for research and engineering. He then joined the faculty at Penn State as a professor of mechanical engineering, retiring in 2001.

In 2007, Harris was selected as an "Outstanding Alumnus" by the Penn State College of Engineering. He also was a member and chairman of the board of directors of Hillel at Penn State. In 2009, the American Bearing Manufacturers Association established the Tedric A. Harris Scholarship Program.

The author of 70 publications, his book, Rolling Bearing Analysis, is recognized as the foremost reference worldwide on rolling-bearing technology.

Harris is survived by his wife of 55 years, Selma Fine Harris; daughter Barbara Harris Gordon; son Philip L. Harris; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Leroy S. Harris.
