Rhoda B. Schwartz, 82, a poet and editor who co-founded the American Poetry Review in 1971, died Dec. 3 at Stapeley Health Care Center in Germantown after a long illness. She had been a resident of the Kennedy House Apartments in Center City for many years.

Schwartz was born in Atlantic City, N.J., and grew up in Elmira, N.Y. She was employed as a technical writer for the Veteran's Administration, and wrote poems in her spare time.

After retirement, Schwartz enrolled in a poetry workshop, and eventually co-founded the American Poetry Review, where she worked as an editor for a number of years.

Her work has been published in various magazines, newspapers and anthologies, and she is listed in the International Who's Who in Poetry and Poets Encyclopedia.

During her active years in the 1970s and '80s, Schwartz gave poetry readings in libraries, bookstores, area colleges and on the radio.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen Schwartz, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Schwartz, in 1986.
