Renee Berger, Founding Member of West Mount Airy Group
Renee Margareten Berger died Dec. 30 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Born and raised in New York City, Berger was the first female graduate of the Ramaz Day School in Manhattan, and was honored by having the school's highest academic honor dedicated in her name. She continued her education at New York University, graduating in 1951.
Berger moved to Philadelphia after her marriage to Harold Berger. She was a founding member of the West Mount Airy Neighborhood Association and the founding chair of the association's public-relations committee. She was also instrumental in securing national and international recognition for the association, which espoused racial integration.
A former board member of the Germantown Jewish Centre, Berger was active in various charitable and civic organizations, including the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. She was a Lion of Judah, and received the Lion of Judah Award from Israel Bonds.
An endowed scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania was dedicated in her name.
In addition to her husband, Berger is survived by daughters Jill Berger and Barbara Baskin; son Jon Berger; sister Muriel Nusbaum; and three grandchildren.
