Recon Rabbis Call for an End to War
The Reform movement is no longer the only denomination calling for an end to the war in Iraq.
The Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association just passed a resolution that goes one step further than the one adopted earlier this month by the Union for Reform Judaism by opposing a preemptive American strike against Iran.
At its annual conference -- held last week in Phoenix and attended by 90 rabbis -- the RRA adopted a resolution calling for a "rapid and responsible withdrawal of U.S. military forces from Iraq.
"It was time for voices in the Jewish community, especially those of rabbis, to be raised in opposition to the continuing carnage that has become the tragedy of Iraq," said Rabbi Toba Spitzer, newly elected president of the association, in a press release.
Regarding Iran and its ongoing attempt to acquire nuclear weapons, the resolution recognizes that the "inflammatory and extremist threats against the U.S. and against Israel made by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad must be taken seriously."
But it also adds that a military strike would result in a political and humanitarian crisis that would serve to strengthen Ahmadinejad and radical elements within Iranian society.
