At 17, Herman enlisted in the Air Force, where he was stationed in Wyoming, Montana and Japan, achieving the rank of sergeant.
For the past 45 years, he worked as a book-publisher's representative, first for Como Sales and then Workman Publishing.
He earned industry awards for salesmanship, and his advice was often sought concerning new books. He would often spot a bestseller long before it was published.
Herman had a deep appreciation for the written word, as well as for classic movies and television.
He is survived by his wife, the former Adele Ross; daughter Marjorie Wassermann; son Daniel Herman; sister P.J. Fineberg; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Joseph Herman.
