Despite the fact that Steinberg was mentally challenged, her determination for independence pushed her to become gainfully employed and a productive member of society.
In 1991, Steinberg was the first person to move into the first JCHAI home. While these facilities observe Jewish customs and traditions, they are officially nonsectarian.
She was also a longtime member of the organization "Adults With Developmental Disabilities." Through this group, Steinberg and her citywide peer group became a closely knit community that socialized and traveled together throughout the world.
She is survived by her parents, Joan and Dr. Stanley B. Steinberg; a sister, Shelley Donato; a brother, Andrew Steinberg; and five nieces and nephews.
Contributions in her memory can be made to: JCHAI, 21 Bala Ave., Suite #100, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.
