From Jesus to Abraham Abulafia to Amnon Yitzhak: Why are Messiahs Needed?

Why and when did the figure of the messiah become so central? Are all messiahs false? We will look at some messianic claimants as a way to understand this phenomenon of Jewish messianism, how it developed in the Middle Ages, and why it is still relevant today.
