A geologist for the state of Pennsylvania compared a film critical of the natural-gas industry to Nazi propaganda.
Last week, the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era reported on comments made by Teddy Borawski, chief oil and gas geologist for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation. Referring to the film "Gasland," which raises issues about the environmental impact of fracking to extract marcellus shale, Borawski replied: "Joseph Goebbels would have been proud. He would have given him the Nazi Award. That, in my opinion, was a beautiful piece of propaganda."
State Rep. Josh Shapiro (D-District 153), a Jewish lawmaker from Abington who is running for Montgomery County commissioner, blasted the comments and pressed Gov. Tom Corbett to repudiate them.
Corbett was asked about the incident at a press conference, reported www.witf.org .
"It's not a statement of this administration," said Corbett. "It's not an appropriate statement of characterization. And sometimes we say things in public that we wish we could get those words back."
Shapiro later said Corbett's response didn't go far enough.
