Dr. Naftali Moses will be the guest speaker at a scholar-in-residence program hosted by Congregation Beth Hamedrosh. Dr. Moses holds a Ph.D. in medical history from Bar-IIan University, and teaches and writes on the nexus of medicine and Judaism. He will give three lectures on Shabbos.
The weekend will open at 8 p.m. services with Dr. Moses speaking on “Bodily Ownership & Somatic Autonomy: Are We the Proprietors of our Own Bodies?” Dessert will be served. There is no charge.
Shacarit service will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday. Dr. Moses will speak on “Autonomy: A Jewish Value?” Kiddush will be served. No charge.
Seudah Shlishit will follow Mincha at 4:15 p.m. “The Secret Life of King Solomon: The Key to the Book of Proverbs” will be the focus of a talk by Dr. Moses. A light meal will be served. Free.
The weekend will conclude with a Melava Malka at 8 p.m.. Dr. Moses will speak about his book Mourning Under the Glass, written after his son was killed in the terrorist attack in the Mercaz HaRav library in Jerusalem. It explores the tensions that arose from the beginning of the first year of mourning between memory and memorial, between private pain and public mourning. A light meal will be served. Cost: $5 per person. Books will be available for purchase.
Sponsorships: $180 includes 4 tickets to Melava Malka, $100 includes 2 tickets to Malava Malka.
