Rebecca Balcher, 90, a strong Zionist and educator, died Aug. 16 at Greenwood House, Jewish nursing home in Ewing, N.J.
Balcher lived in Israel for five years with son Aharon Botzer prior to coming to the Delaware Valley area two years ago under the care of son Lou Balcher.
She matriculated to the University of Minnesota at age 15. She received a law degree in 1940 at William Mitchell School of Law in St. Paul, Minn.
Balcher was a major force for "grass roots" education in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. As sales manager for World Book Encyclopedia, she had half the city under her direct supervision. She put educational tools in the homes of thousands of urban families, and personally trained hundreds of urban residents in sales, community relations and education. In addition, she led Hebrew and Bible study sessions in her home.
She celebrated her 90th birthday on Aug. 11 at Greenwood House with her children. Son Aharon will accompany her to her final resting place in Tzfat, Israel.
Balcher is survived by daughters Shari Weiss and Connie Inukai, and sons Aharon Botzer, Lou Balcher, Charles Balcher and Judah Botzer.
Memorial donations should be made to charities that support Jewish education.
