I was pleased to respond positively to the request of Leonard Barrack, the chair of the board of trustees of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, to chair the Jewish Publishing Group, the publishers of the Jewish Exponent and Inside magazine.
I have been familiar with the newspaper for decades, have admired its quality, and am aware of how it is respected by journalists throughout the United States and the Jewish world.
My years of involvement in Jewish communal life, which includes the presidency of Temple Adath Israel, the presidency of Solomon Schechter Day School, the chairmanship of the Federation Allied Jewish Appeal campaign, the presidency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, and my national and overseas involvement on the board of governors of the Jewish Agency for Israel and the chairmanship of the United Israel Appeal, causes me to appreciate the diversity of our extended Jewish community.
As a result, I have learned to respect the opinions of those who may disagree with me, especially when I know them to be sincerely devoted to the welfare of the Jewish people. In addition, I understand that to attract quality journalists, it is essential that the editorial independence of the newspaper be maintained, while keeping an open mind to different points of view. This has been the goal of the management and staff of the Exponent in the past, and I'm sure that it will continue to be so in the future.
At times, some members of our community have questioned the paper's objectivity, and the balance of reporting and editorial policies. While I support the award-winning staff of our newspaper and their efforts to ensure fairness, I know that such criticism is simply part of the publishing business. However, I am committed to making certain that the staff will continue to create an environment that is as open as possible, assuring members of our community that the Exponent remains dedicated to serving the interests of the entire community.
