The 2012 Federation Main Event was memorable on two levels. This dynamic evening provided our Jewish community with a unique opportunity to perpetuate the memory of Joseph Smukler, a man who embodied Federation’s core values of tzedakah and tikkun olam. Joe gave generously of his time, his heart and his resource to make this Jewish world more vital and vibrant.

When he passed away in July 2012, Federation decided to perpetuate his memory by renaming the Community Leadership Award in his honor. In front of an impressive crowd of more than 600 community members, Stephen B. Klein became the very first recipient of the Joseph Smukler Community Leadership Award. May this high achievement inspire Steve to continue his passionate philanthropic commitment to organizations in Greater Philadelphia and in Israel that aid victims of terrorism and provide education, health care and social services that improve the lives of others.

The event raised more than $2.1 million in support of programs and initiatives that address hunger and food insecurity, build strong Jewish identity, provide a safety net to families at risk, enable older adults to live independently in their own communities and afford Federation with the resources it needs to help others in a myriad of other ways here in Greater Philadelphia, in Israel and in the former Soviet Union.
