Gratz College Appoints Paul Finkelman as its 11th President
Gratz College named Paul Finkelman as the 11th president in the institution’s 122-year history.
He succeeds Joy Goldstein, who resigned in December 2016.
“Dr. Finkelman is a renowned scholar with a wide range of interests and expertise,” said Michelle Portnoff, chairwoman of the college’s Board of Governors. “We are particularly pleased with his work in civil rights and social justice because it dovetails with one of Gratz College’s biggest and fastest-growing programs, Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Dr. Finkelman has a national reputation and network, which will help us expand our online programming in this field, as well as in the other degrees we offer.”
Finkelman is finishing his tenure as the Fulbright Chair in Human Rights and Social Justice at the University of Ottawa School of Law and was also the John E. Murray Visiting Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 2017. He is the author of more than 200 scholarly articles and the author or editor of more than 50 books, including the forthcoming, Supreme Injustice: Slavery in the Nation’s Highest Court.
Longtime Family Practice Physician Eli Zucker Dies at 76
Eli Zucker, a longtime family practice physician with Hatboro Medical Associates, died Nov. 10 in his home in Rydal.
A graduate of Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and Hahnemann Medical College, Zucker served as a resident at Abington Memorial Hospital, then as an Air Force captain at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
He was a member of Congregation Adath Jeshurun. In latter years, he was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Retired Executives and Professionals (REAP) program.
Large Delegation from KI Attending URJ Biennial
A record delegation of 24 religious and lay leaders from Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel is attending the 2017 Union for Reform Judaism (UJR) Biennial in Boston, which runs until Dec. 10.
Rabbi Stacy Rigler, KI’s director of religious education, will address the topic of collaborative education at the event, while KI teen William Saltzburg will lead other teens attending as the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) board membership vice president. Longtime member Karen Sirota will work in her capacity as URJ large congregations director.
