Mt. Airy Klezmer King Honored by 'Forward'
Mount Airy's long-reigning klezmer king, Hankus Netsky, has been named to The Forward 50, a list of 50 American Jews "who’ve had the greatest impact on the world in 2013," according to the New York-based Jewish newspaper.
Raised in Mount Airy, Netsky is a longtime member of the New England Conservatory, where he chairs its Contemporary Improvisation Department. He's also a leading voice in the national klezmer revival as part of the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Some years back, he composed the klezmer musical, Shlemiel the First, with Zalmen Mlotek, which premiered in Philadelphia before going national.
