Miriam Savar, 91, Stockbroker

Miriam Savar, 91, one of the early local female stockbrokers, died Oct. 9 at Watermark at Logan Square, where she had resided for 10 years.

A longtime resident of Center City, the former Miriam Kohn graduated in 1932 from Overbrook High School. She earned a certificate to teach, but decided to work in clerical positions for several firms until marrying accountant Milton J. Savar in 1944.

She studied accounting courses at the University of Pennsylvania, and was certified as a stockbroker in the early 1950s.

Savar worked for the former Charles A. Taggart firm.

She also assisted her husband in his accounting business until the mid-1980s. He died in 2003.

Savar is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Levy, and two grandchildren.
