Michael J. Haut, 71, Hematologist, Oncologist

Michael J. Haut, 71, a prom­inent hematologist and oncologist at Pennsylvania Hospital, died June 26. He lived in Center City.

A graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, he went on to get his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Haut interned at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and did his residency at Phil­adelphia’s Presbyterian Medical Center, with a fellowship in hem­atology and oncology completed at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital.

An Army physician at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Haut was its chief of hematology from 1974 to 1979. In 1979, he was presented its Meritorious Service Medal.

Haut came to Pennsylvania Hospital in 1979, and the board certified physician became a clinical professor 21 years later. He directed its Sickle Cell Disease Program in cooperation with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; and Pennsylvania Hospital’s Special Coagulation Laboratory in 1981, as well as its Philadelphia Adult Gaucher’s Disease Center in 1991.

He is survived by his wife, the former Rosalie Brooks; a daughter, Wendy L.; two sons, Jonathan B., and Dr. Elliott of Johns Hopkins University, who received his training by his dad’s side; a brother, Dr. Lewis; and two grandchildren.
