Louise Klein Binswanger, 74, one of the city's leading citizens who was known for her commitment and volunteerism to many of the area's important cultural and charitable institutions, died June 23.

Binswanger was the wife of John K. Binswanger, co-chairman of the Binswanger Companies, a family-owned, international real estate services firm headquartered in Philadelphia, as well as former chairman of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

Louise Klein, who grew up in Elkins Park, attended Cheltenham High School and Connecticut College.

Binswanger was a founder and longtime treasurer of the Philadelphia Craft Show. She also served on the board of associates of the Fox Chase Cancer Center for decades, as well as on the Women's Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

For 17 years, she was a tour guide for the historic homes in Fairmount Park. She also spent many years volunteering as an assistant librarian and assistant teacher at Germantown Academy and the Abington Friends School.

As a member of one of Philadelphia's most prominent families, Binswanger was a supporter, along with her husband, of a large number of area charitable organizations, including the United Way and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1984, Binswanger became a pioneer in trying to publicize the importance of early detection and treatment.

As such, she agreed to be the subject of the area's first television and print campaign (on behalf of Fox Chase Cancer Center) designed to encourage dialogue and provide hope for others similarly situated.

In addition to her husband, Binswanger is survived by daughters Jill Binswanger Garrett and Janet Binswanger Israel; sons David Binswanger and Richard Binswanger; and 11 grandchildren.

Donations in her memory can be made to: the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Institutional Advancement, 333 Cottman Ave., Room C-223, Philadelphia, PA 19111.
