‘DSA and the Children of Capitalism’ (Op-Ed, July 23)
I write concerning the oversimplified op-ed by David J. Butler in the July 23 issue.
He says that, regarding socialism, “millions of people spent the last century trying so desperately to escape it.” This is a commonly stated claim. How does he know this?
My own grandparents left the Russian Empire to escape the czar and antisemitism-fueled pogroms. I have known many immigrants and children of immigrants over the years, and nobody ever told me they left their home country because of the economic system. Actually, The Wall Street Journal and the Brookings Institution reported that, in 2025, more people left the United States than entered. Mr. Butler can read the various reasons why. None have to do with capitalism versus socialism.
I know this article is in the opinion section. But even opinions have to have some basis in fact.
