Leading by Example
During a reception held on Sept. 26 to honor the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia's Legacy Society, 130 members and their guests "visited" their designated plaques on the four Legacy Walls in the atrium of the Jewish Community Services Building, as they also heard words of praise for their investment in the future of the Jewish community.
In its eighth year, the society currently honors 280 individuals, couples and families who have made endowment and planned gifts of $100,000 or more. To date, their gifts total $155 million. At the reception, 17 new members were welcomed into the Legacy Society.
The Legacy Society Walls represent four of the historic gates of Jerusalem - Golden, Zion, Jaffa and Lion. Each gate denotes a different level of giving.
"The Legacy Society members lead by example," proclaimed Clifford D. Schlesinger, president of Federation Endowments Corporation. "This is a group with a tremendous commitment to Federation and all it supports through their endowment gifts. People who have joined have had firsthand opportunities to see the energy and excitement of the organization and its work, which ensures the long-term viability of the local Jewish community and communities around the world."
The keynote speaker for the event was Lee Meyerhoff Hendler, a national Jewish community leader. Author of The Year Mom Got Religion, she is immediate past co-chair of United Jewish Community's Family Philanthropy Institute.
Meyerhoff Hendler's message centered on Jewish values, and making philanthropy as meaningful and rewarding as possible.
Susan and Jeffrey Schwartz, and Nina and William Albert are Legacy Society co-chairs. The evening was underwritten by Christie's and Karr Barth Associates, Inc.
"The Legacy Society bring members together every year to let them know just how much they're appreciated," said Susan Schwartz. "It's a very important Federation priority to say: 'Thank you.' "
