Klezmer & Turkish Music

December 16, 2012 7:30 PM

Shtreiml blends high-octane klezmer and Turkish music at Crossroads on December 16.

Montreal klezmer innovators Shtreiml will join Turkish vocal/oud virtuoso İsmail Hakkı Fencioğlu for a evening concert and free afternoon children's program of  "Jewish Roots & Turkish Blues."

The free children's program takes place at 6:00 pm. The concert is at 7:30, and tickets are $10 to 30 and available online at the door.

Founded in 2002, Montreal/Philly-based Shtreiml offers a high-octane mix of not-so-traditional Eastern-European Jewish and Turkish music. Led by harmonica innovator Jason Rosenblatt, one of the few people worldwide who can play the diatonic harmonica (a.k.a. blues harp) chromatically, Shtreiml's blues-rock infused set delivers a new look at some centuries old folk music. Along with Rachel Lemisch (trombone), Thierry Arsenault (drums) and Joel Kerr (bass) the group's set has been labeled "explosive" (Halifax Chronicle Herald) and "exhilarating" (Rootsworld). Shtreiml will be joined by world renowned Turkish oud player and vocalist İsmail Hakkı Fencioğlu. Enchanting, virtuosic ornate, İsmail is a true master of Turkish music. He has mesmerized Canadian and European audiences with his fleet fingered oud playing and soaring vocals.

Through compelling original compositions and new arrangements of traditional folk melodies the ensemble explores the ancient connections between Jewish and Turkish music.
