After noting a handful of men who had received commissions in the Officers’ Reserve Corps, enlistments for the Army, Marines, Navy, First Pennsylvania Infantry, Third Pennsylvania Infantry and Headquarters Train and Military Police were listed.
Those drafted were covered next, with those holding number 258 in the lottery “drawn from the big glass bowl” selected. That included two brothers.
“The men are Maurice and Harry Goldberg, both living in the same exemption district and residing at 1623 North Franklin street,” according to the article, which called it a “remarkable coincidence.”
Harry Goldberg, 22, was described as a salesman away on business in New York City, while Maurice Goldberg, 24, was a jewelry salesman working at Strawbridge & Clothier. The elder Goldberg also apparently attended night school at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and was a lieutenant in the Philadelphia Reserve Officers.
Rabbis Max D. Klein of Congregation Adath Jeshurun and Rabbi David B. Swiren of the Montefiore Congregation also were drafted, but their clergy status exempted them from serving.
