Jewish Practices in Death & Mourning

February 23, 2014 10:00 AM

Jewish Practices in Death & Mourning: Adult Ed Course at Germantown Jewish Centre

with Rabbi Lewis & Rabbi Zeff

Begins on Sunday, February 2

As death is an inevitable part of life, at some time in our journey we all fill the roles of mourners and comforters.  We will explore the wisdom and practices of Judaism that help us cope with death and bereavement; discuss the meaning of Jewish traditions for the end-of-life and mourning. We will reflect on the power of memory and the origins of the practices of Yizkor (remember) and yahrtzeit (anniversary of the death).  Incorporating our own experiences of loss and bereavement and the voices of ancient and contemporary thinkers, we will talk about possibilities for mourning and for comforting those in mourning. At our last session of Feb. 23 we will welcome guest teacher Simcha Raphael to speak on Jewish Views of the Afterlife (this session will be open to the community, not just those enrolled in the course.

Four sessions:  Sun 10-11:30 AM/Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23

GJC Members $50/Non-members $65

Advanced registration necessary, but is welcomed, contact program@germantownjewishcentre.org or 215-844-1507 X 19.
