BYER
SARAH (Nee LICHTMAN) BYER of Northeast Phila., beloved wife of the late MAX BYER and devoted mother, died August 30, 2005. Born in Russia, SARAH immigrated to the United States with her family in 1921.
She and her husband were very successful business people, owning and operating a grocery store for over 40 years in North Phila. After more than 50 years of marriage, her husband died in 1983.
Later in life, SARAH was a member of B’nai Chaim, Jewish Women, International, and the Action Alliance of Senior Citizens of Phila. (Seniors Helping Seniors). In addition, she was an award winning volunteer at the David G. Neuman Senior Citizen Center in Oxford Circle where she managed the Jewelry Counter and helped prepare food for the Cook for a Friend program.
Her true legacy remains in having been a positive influence and encouragement to her family. She is survived by her three children; JOSEPH BYER (CAROL) of Wilmington, DE, ROSE (BYER) SIDEMAN of Philadelphia, and DR. BARRY BYER (SHARYN) of Falls Church, Virginia, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

SAMUEL A. GOTTLIEB the founder and owner of Multi Flow, which was founded in 1938 and located at 1434 County Line Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA, died September 7, 2005. He was 85 and lived in Boca Raton, Florida. MR. GOTTLIEB was very active in Israel Bonds and was also honored by them. He was a member of Ashbourne County Club, a veteran of WW II (branch of the Navy), and was a former member and former treasurer of Congregation Adath Jeshurun.

MICHAEL KAYE, 55, died after a sudden and tragic illness on August 31, 2005.

He expressed his dedication to serving people through his volunteer work at Landmark Education for over 20 years, and professionally as a business consultant for Gap International, Inc., a global management consulting company.

She loved working with children and wanted to pursue an education in psychology.

JOEL E. LEWIS, M.D., of Newport Beach, CA, formerly of Phila., died on August 30, 2005. He was 52. The son of EDWARD and the late EVELYN SHOAP LEWIS, he was an allergist in Costa Mesa, CA. DR. LEWIS was a graduate of Northeast High School, Temple University, and Temple University School of Medicine. He completed a pediatric residency at LA County Children’s Hospital, as well as an allergy and asthma fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA. He was board-certified in both pediatrics and allergy. DR. LEWIS was also trained in acupuncture therapies. A member of numerous professional societies, he lectured extensively in his field throughout California and the west. He was a frequent commentator on allergy topics for local TV stations. DR. LEWIS’ avocation was magic, and he was a performing member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood, as well as a member of the Academy of Magical Arts in Hollywood. In addition to his father he is survived by his wife; MICHELLE (AST), daughters; ERICA and SABRINA, and a brother; DR. IRWIN (DR. LINDA) LEWIS. Because he overcame Hodgkin’s disease as a young man with the help of Dr. John Glick, the family requests that contributions be made care of Dr. Glick to the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

MORLEY
DAVID JEROME MORLEY died September 2, 2005. Beloved husband of 48 years to RUTH FINKELSTEIN MORLEY. Loving father of PHILLIP and MARTIN MORLEY. Grandfather to ALEXA, BRIANNA and JESSICA MORLEY. Born in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York, DAVID quit school in the 7th grade to help support his family. During the Korean War, he proudly served with the U.S. Army Medical Corp for 8 years and earned his GED. It was during his military service that he met and married RUTH FINKELSTEIN from Phila. At the conclusion of his military service, the couple moved to Kentucky so that DAVID could attend Kentucky State Teachers College. They then returned to Philadelphia. where DAVID completed his studies at Temple University and received his Bachelors of Science in Education.
His love of teaching and desire to help improve the lives of others inspired him to accept a teaching job with the School District of Phila. While with the School District, he worked for over 45 years as a grade school teacher, union organizer, and beloved teacher to his students.
DAVID also supported his community as well as his family. He received a Citizens Commendation from the Police Commissioner for chasing down and apprehending a purse-snatcher that had invaded his elementary school.
He was a hard working father who, in addition to teaching, owned and operated a hot dog establishment in South Phila., worked as a Cottage Parent at the Assoc. of Jewish Children, and chauffeured children to Hebrew school at 18th and Spruce.
His close friends knew him as a man with a heart of gold who enjoyed traveling and spending time with his friends and family. Ever the New Yorker, DAVID enjoyed sharing his opinions and would often say, “You’re entitled to an opinion as long as it’s mine!” Honoring his last and final wishes, arrangements and services will be private.

BARBARA NEIBAUER (Nee COHEN), 59, died September 4, 2005, following a long battle against Thymic Carcinoma. BARBARA was a teacher at Harding Junior High School and Frankford High School, in Philadelphia, where she developed an award-winning course on medical laboratory science. She was also Assistant Professor and Director of the Clinical Laboratory Science Program at the Phila. College of Pharmacy and Science. BARBARA was a volunteer member of the Downbeach Domestic Violence Response Team, MANNA, and other local charities, as well as a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. She was an originator of the Foundation for Thymic Cancer Research, which funds and supports research into this rare and aggressive cancer. She is survived by her husband; ALAN, sister; NANCY CHESIN and nephews; ADAM CHESIN and JOSHUA SCHNIEDER.

SARAH ROTH (Nee FREUND), formerly of Phila., died August 22, 2005. She was 83 and lived in Delray Beach, FL. SARAH was born in Jerusalem, Israel and moved to Phila. with her family at the age of 3. She was a graduate of South Phila. High School for Girls and a retired employee of the Phila. Naval Depot. SARAH received a grant to study art at the Barnes Foundation and remained an accomplished painter and sculptor throughout her life. For the last several summers, she taught watercolor painting to seniors at the University of Wisconsin. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, WILLIAM "BILL" ROTH; son DR. SCHEININ
HYMAN SCHEININ died on September 1, 2005 at age 96.  He lived in New York City and Long Island for 90 years.  Since 1999, he lived with his son and daughter-in-law in Philadelphia and then in Willow Grove.  HY was a track star, a craftsman, a teacher, a home builder, and a loyal family man.  In his later years, he became an amazing storyteller, his memories reaching back vividly to the early 1900s.  He was an unusually interesting person, and lived a long, rich life.

HARRY SHIPPEN, age 99, a former Phila. resident, passed away on September 1, 2005 in Scottsdale, AZ.
He is survived by daughters; GLORIA (HARTLEY J.) SAPPOL of Phoenix, AZ and MARION HOFFMAN of Philadelphia, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held Sunday, September 4th, 2005 in Scottsdale.

SMALL
SYBIL SMALL (Nee KORFF) of Perrysburg, OH, died on August 20, 2005 from metatastic breast cancer at age 72. Born SYBIL JUNE KORFF in Phila., she was the wife of the late MILTON SMALL. She is survived by three sons; JOSHUA VINCENT (ANNE) of Chicago, IL; ROBERT VINCENT (SONIA) of Perrysburg, OH; and ADAM BLESS of Portland, OR. Also survived by her grandson, LUKE VINCENT; her sister; CHARLOTTE SHAPIRO (JACK) of Wynnewood, PA, and nephews; RICHARD, MICHAEL and JONATHAN SHAPIRO.
DR. SMALL earned her bachelor's, masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Toledo, where she later became a part-time professor of English literature. She was an accomplished artist whose oil paintings and watercolors appeared in many local exhibitions. Her most passionate avocation was that of actress, appearing in more than twenty northwest Ohio regional theater productions.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in DR. SMALL's name to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 East River Road, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551.
