Her formal study of piano began at the age of four at the Settlement Music School and with noted instructors in the Philadelphia area, making regular concert appearances from 1940-1948. Earlier, her debut at the Philadelphia Academy of Music was aided, as she described it, by several telephone books propping me up on the piano stool. She began to teach piano at age sixteen and received the only full-tuition music scholarship given by the Philadelphia Board of Education in 1944. She attended Temple University, Department of Music Education, Teachers College, and graduated in 1948 with a B.A. in Education with a minor in English. From 1949-1952, she taught choral and orchestral conducting, and in 1956, joined the faculty of the Temple University Department of Music where she taught piano, methods and theory, serving until 1958.
