GORDON
SUSAN J. GORDON, 62, of Haddonfield, New Jersey, died on July 15, 2005. DR. GORDON was chief of gastroenterology at Graduate Hospital and a professor at Drexel University College of Medicine, died of lymphoma at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. DR. GORDON was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lymphoma four years ago but treated patients until the morning she was admitted to the hospital.
She approached her illness with determination and wanted no sympathy. She didnt want people to know about her illness and hated anyone to feel sorry for her. When it came to her patients, DR. GORDON was very sympathetic and concerned. Her patients came to rely on her not only for medical expertise and empathy, but also for counsel in family matters, said Lawrence J. Leventhal, chief of rheumatology at Graduate Hospital.
In her long career as an attending physician, researcher and professor, it was her work with students and fellows that gave DR. GORDON the most joy. Lessons came not by way of lecture, added fellow doctor Michael Wolfson, but by example.
DR. GORDON grew up surrounded by doctors who were her role models in medicine. Her grandfather and her father were physicians, and the first level of her familys home served as her fathers medical office.
Her brother once said something like Im going to be a doctor and SUSANS going to be a nurse. Her father said, Well see who is going to be the doctor and whos going to be the nurse. Both became doctors.
DR. GORDON studied biology and chemistry at Goucher College in Towson, MD, and earned a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1966.
She was an attending physician at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, became their chief of gastroenterology and taught there for 27 years before joining Tenet Healthcare Corp. in the late 1990s. She was appointed to head Graduate Hospitals gastroenterology division in 2003 and was repeatedly named a Top Doc by Philadelphia Magazine.
In addition to her husband, DR. GORDON is survived by parents MAURICE B. and MURIEL GORDON, a niece and two nephews. Her brother BENJAMIN LEE GORDON, II, died 20 years ago.
Memorial services were held for DR. GORDON at Graduate Hospitals Boehm Auditorium. Memorial donations may be made to:
