Leading national hematologists earlier this week presented new basic and clinical research findings at the 46th annual American Society of Hematology meeting in Atlanta, which included hope for those going through chemotherapy.

Among topics explored: mouth sores, a harsh side effect of chemotherapy, which strips the mouth of protective mucous membranes.

Dr. Michael Schuster of New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center showed research on the drug Velafermin for rebuilding mucous membranes in the mouth.
