GOODMAN

 

A. Benjamin Goodman 95, of Mechanicsburg, PA formerly of Trotter, St., Philadelphia, passed away on March 12, 2013 at Pinnacle Harrisburg Hospital of a blood and urinary tract infection. Ben was born in December 1917, the son of Charles and Dora Goodman, immigrants from Eastern Europe. He graduated Central High School in 1935 and briefly attended the University of Pennsylvania.  He worked for the Veterans Administration for several years in Washington, DC before joining the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 where he served as Radioman Second Class aboard the USCGC VIGILANT (WPC-154).  Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to Philadelphia for a job with the VA and remained with them until 1962 when he began working for the Social Security Administration (until 1975), achieving the position of claims examiner supervisor.  He also worked part-time as a salesman at Adams Clothes on Frankford Ave. He married his wife, Sylvia, in 1949, a marriage of 64 years.  He outlived brother David and Solis.  He is survived by his wife, Sylvia of Mechanicsburg, son Robert M Goodman and wife Qiuyan Yang of Mechanicsburg, son Fred J Goodman and his partner Denise Brown of Montgomery Village, MD, granddaughters Carly Goodman of Philadelphia and Dr. Lesley Goodman of Cambridge, MA, sister Eleanor Rappaport of Front Royal, VA brothers' widows Ann Goodman and Pamela Goodman, in-laws Morris and Dorothy Sarnoff and nieces and nephews Charles Goodman, Michelle, Gerald and Sallie (Williamson) Goodman; Stephen, Janet (Rosenfield) and Bruce Rappaport; and Rochelle (Stein), David and Michael Sarnoff.
