Elise K. Friedman, 93, Multitalented Athlete and Extensive Traveler

Elise Kohn Friedman, 93, died Nov. 24.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Friedman attended Oak Lane Country Day School.

In 1936, she graduated from Swarthmore College. She was extremely athletic in her youth and played hockey and basketball at Swarthmore.

In her late 20s, she took up golf. For decades, she was a proficient golfer. For many years, she competed as a member of the Rydal Country Club golf team. She also played tennis until she was 86.

Friedman and her late husband, Paul S. Friedman, not only raised their own three children, but also opened their home to many other children of fractured marriages or unhappy home lives.

Friedman and her late husband were longtime travelers who visited Europe many times, China, India, Central America, and even took a 1975 trip through Romania.

She is survived by daughter Ellen R. Friedman; sons Peter B. Friedman and Steven L. Friedman; and six grandchildren.
