David W. Levin, Physician, Dies at the Age of 87
Levin graduated from West Philadelphia High School, St. Josephs College in Overbrook, and earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He interned at Mount Sinai Hospital in Philadelphia.
He served residencies and fellowships in pathology, internal medicine and pulmonary disease in Doctors Hospital in Philadelphia, Queens-General-Triboro Medical Center in New York City, and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany, N.Y.
In 1952, Levin joined the V.A. Medical Center in Coatesville as the chief of the Respiratory Care Center, retiring in 1979 to enter private practice. He was president of the VAC Medical-Dental Staff for many years.
In addition, he was an emeritus instructor in medicine of his alma mater, the Jefferson Medical College, and was co-author of several medical reports.
Levin was a board member of the American Lung Association of Pennsylvania for 17 years, representing Delaware and Chester counties, serving on and chairing committees. He was on the executive committee of the Pennsylvania Thoracic Society 1963 through 1965.
He chaired the Pennsylvania State Committee on Tuberculin Testing of School Children, which resulted in skin testing instead of chest X-rays. He received an outstanding performance award from the V.A. for this effort and on two other occasions.
He was vice president and comptroller of the Norristown Zoological Society in the late 1970s. He served on the board of the Montgomery County Association for the Blind for several years to 1997.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Levin was a member of American Legion Post #0754 and the DAV. He was honored with membership in the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in 1983.
He was a member of Or Ami Congregation of Lafayette Hill.
Levin is survived by daughters Susan J. Binder, Kathi Rae Levin and Ellen Anne Sittig; son Dr. Matthew W. Levin; three grandchildren; and three nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, the former Norma Leventhal, who died on Aug. 16, 1997; sister Marion B. Levin; and brother Jerome Levin.
