Federation’s Renaissance and Women’s Philanthropy affinity groups threw a Purim party for 55 Philadelphia-area families — all of whom had children ages 5 or younger. The March 9 morning program at Nest in Center City included balloon making, a pizza lunch with hamantashen for dessert and a special story hour featuring books from PJ Library.

PJ Library, Jkidphilly, Camp Harlam, Camp Ramah and Interfaith Family partnered with Federation to ensure the success of this madcap morning, which engaged 200 people in one of the most festive holidays on the Jewish calendar.

Alison and Scott Paymer serve as co-chairs of young family programming for the Renaissance Group, the Federation affinity for Jewish men and women ages 45 and younger. The couple said they were gratified by the strong turnout for this program — one of three holiday celebrations sponsored by this arm of Renaissance to ensure that families with young children have ways to connect with the Greater Philadelphia Jewish community.

This kind of programming, now in its second year, “offers young families from Center City and the Philadelphia suburbs who share Jewish values and traditions an opportunity to meet one another and to celebrate and learn about Jewish holidays together,” Alison Paymer explained.

She added that “many who attend are not yet affiliated with synagogues or other Jewish communal organizations, and these holiday celebrations offer them a way to engage as a family.” She and Scott are the proud parents of Maddie, who turns 2 next month and is always one of the first children to join in the fun.

The next outing for the group will be on Sunday, May 18, at Penn’s Landing. Special activities are planned to engage families with young children in Federation’s community-wide Israel 66 celebration, scheduled from noon to 5 p.m.
