Community Invited to Film Screening
The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s Women of Vision Foundation and Renaissance Group have joined forces to host a private screening of an uplifting film about the power of education to transform lives.
Girlrising, which tells the stories of nine girls from across the globe
who have encountered and overcome obstacles to receive an education, will be shown on Tuesday, Oct. 22, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at the Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy, 272 South Bryn Mawr Ave., Bryn Mawr.
Each girl’s story was written by an author from her native country and is narrated by a cast of award-winning actresses, including Meryl Streep; Kerry Washington; Anne Hathaway; Salma Hayek; and Alicia Keys.
The evening opens with a kosher wine and hors d’oeuvres reception. Following the screening, Homa Sabet Tavangar, the author of Growing Up Global: Raising Children to Be at Home in the World, will moderate a discussion about the film and will answer questions from the audience.
Tavangar, who has received acclaim from national education and business leaders and the media for her work to promote global opportunity and equality for women and girls, has been a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania and is a regular contributor to print and electronic news publications.
The entire community is invited to register online at: www.jewishphilly.org/wov by Tuesday, Oct. 15, and watch a trailer from the film. Admission is $36 per person, $5 suggested donation for students with valid identification. l
