ROSA ARATEN (nee SCHRIEBER), age 96, passed away on February 25, 2010. She was a homemaker who resided in Cherry Hill, NJ, though born in Poland. She was also a member of the Association of Holocaust Survivors. IRWIN FRANK, age 91, passed away on February 24, 2010. He was a Mason and undertook to repair homes in Queen Village and Society Hill. He graduated from Central High School. He was in scouting from his 12th birthday. He helped build SGF Camp in Collegeville, PA, created by the alumni in Troop 95, dedicated to send underprivileged children to camp, and continued to maintain bunks. He worked at the Phila. Navy Yard and was a veteran with the Seabees in 1946. He was a Mason and a Shriner. Husband of the late ADELE (nee VOLINSKY); father of DEBRA FRANK KARTEN and ROBIN (ROBERT) ROSENFELD; his wonderful caretaker CEECEE (CECELIA BONNER); and a host of niece and nephews. He was a Tie Manufacturer and Insurance Salesman.  LOUIS’s greatest strength, in his life, was that he was a wonderful Dad, and Zayda to OREN, SHELLEY, TOBEY and ELI. Burial will be in Israel.

SILVERMAN

GERT J. (nee PASSON) SILVERMAN died peacefully on February 25, 2010, at the age of 94, while enjoying Yiddish songs by Connie Francis.  She went to her eternal rest on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in Delray Beach, FL next to her beloved husband JACK G. and brother MORRIS in Delray Beach, Florida.  Born into the PASSON family in South Philly, she eventually moved to Florida and returned home in recent years. She outlived her one sister BERTHA and five brothers SAM, CHICK, NAT, MORRIS, HARRY, whom she adored.  She is survived by her children BONNIE and JERRY, grand-pets SIMMIE, SHEBA, SHAYNA PUNIM, as well as many nieces and nephews, her marvelous caretakers DOTTIE and SHIRLEY, and the terrific staff at the Glendale Nursing Home. GERT worked most of her life as a secretary and owner of several home businesses, a woman ahead of her time.  Her passion was her artwork, and she served as a volunteer art therapist at Byberry Hospital and other locations. GERT had a passion for standing up for the under-served, was active in many organizations, synagogues, and communities, and served as an outstanding example for us all. SPITZ
ALBERT W. SPITZ, died peacefully at his home on February 10, 2010. He was a  noted Chemical Engineer, Inventor, Artist and Golfer. ALBERT was the son of JOHN and DOROTHY (STERN) SPITZ. He was born and raised in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.  He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1949, after working for several major Chemical companies, he founded his own engineering firm, offering his expertise in air pollution control, and metal recycling, to a large number of clients both in the Philadelphia area and throughout the United States as well as  in Israel,  where he was invited by Golda Meir to participate actively, in the Third Economic Conference in Jerusalem, as well as in South America. During the course of his long career, he was awarded  several patents for a variety of processes and devices, including a process for refining scrap copper and a system for removing pollutants from gas streams. ALBERT SPITZ was a member of a number of professional societies, and received an award from the Philadelphia Metals Association for “A Lifetime of service to the recycling Metal Industry in engineering and environmental control technology.” In his spare time, he attended art classes and assembled a large portfolio of his sketches and paintings.  He also did sculpting in clay and made several bronze busts and free form statues.  From the time he was a teenager, he enjoyed playing golf and won several trophies.  He was twice President of Rydal Country Club, remaining a member until it closed. He was married to the late INA (GREIF) SPITZ for over 50 years, living in Elkins Park, in a house he designed.  At the age of 87, he met an  English widow, MAUREEN WARNER, and later married her. He is sadly missed by his wife, MAUREEN, his two children ROBERT (JUDIE) and JOANNE (RICHARD) both of Boston, his five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, his two step children DAVID (LIN)  WARNER and CHANTAL (RONI) AUERBACH;    his personal assistant for 40 years, MARY DEANE and his many friends and associates. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Development Fund of Abington Memorial Hospital in honor of Dr. Martin Trichtinger. A Memorial Service has been arranged  for Noon, on April 24, 2010, at the Philmont Country Club.
