U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, a socially conservative Democrat who sits on the Foreign Relations Committee, held onto his seat Tuesday despite a high-dollar campaign from challenger Tom Smith.

Republican Smith, a political newcomer and coal entrepreneur from Western Pennsylvania, spent roughly $17 million of his own money in an effort to close what had been a double-digit Casey lead. His efforts succeeded in heating up the race, yet Casey still managed to become the first Pennsylvania Democrat to win a second Senate term in half a century.
